The following timeline of major events in Downalla is presented using the Forest Friends calendar. There are, of course, other systems in use; but this solar calendar is easily comprehensible those of us who use the Gregorian. The Forest Friends' calendar is measured in solar years partly for religious reasons. They predict that the year will shorten over millenia as the Sun races to reunite with her sister, the Moon. The current year is 2421.
Dates from more than 2421 years ago are numbered as part of a previous era, called the "Third Age" by the Kijreki. However, for the benefit of "real-world" readers, these times are here referred to as "BCE" (before common era), in the same manner as "real" years.
This calendar is still used by the etaKijreki, Geleti and by Bird-Folk all over the world. The Gamaki only use the calendar for religious festivals, due to the influence of their Taigruz former masters.
The solar year on the planet of Downalla is considerably longer than ours. It is almost exactly 400.5 days long. Time is relative and subjective, so exact comparisons are impossible, but a human from our planet would experience a day on Downalla as about 25 hours. The Forest Friends' calendar allows for two leap days, one each around Midsummer and Midwinter, once every four years. These are always feast days. Parliaments of the Kijreki which fall in leap years are considered particularly auspicious.
Year 0 of the calendar is said to have been the first after the break up of the Forest Friends due to Éalfarsc invasion. For the Kijreki, the period since this Year 0 is the "Fourth Age". The First was spent in the earth; the Second was the time before the Friendship, and the Third was the era of power-sharing.
It can be quite reductivist to present the world's history in terms of states and "peoples", both of which are imagined and often culturally-specific lenses to gaze through. However, it's the simplest way to order Downalla's major past events.
