The Gualloir Ilverã (standard Laracoir pronunciation: /gwalwa:ʁ ilvərɑ̃/) is an absolute monarchy. It is bordered to the south by Fìsá, the Inland Sea to the west, and the Narrow Sea to the east. Across the water is Arlthun. It is made up of two former kingdoms: Lailacenne (/lajlakɛn/) in the north, and Azhwallõ (/aʒwalõ/) in the south. These formerly independent states have been ruled by the Royal House of Ilverõ since 1169 (Kijreki years).
The Ẽgoir (/ẽgwa:ʁ/) are the majority ethnic group in the state. The Ẽgoir are closely related to humans, as both ultimately descend from giants. However, the Ẽgoir are much larger than most humans owing to this heritage, like the Geleti.
The Ẽgoir are not the only people in the Gualloir by any means. In the mountains of Lailacenne, small numbers of giants can still be found. Until recently, giants were hunted for their tough, ivory-like bones. They were widely portrayed as supernatural, malevolent and threatening to the Ẽgoir. Ilverõ VII has banned the practice of killing giants, and has passed considerable protections for them. However, he has a paternalistic view of giants, seeing them as a "primitive" people.
In Azhwallõ, two different human groups can be found. In the south, there are humans of Fìsá descent; some people have mixed Fìsá and Ẽgoir heritage. The city of Camelõ has a particularly large mixed community. Some southern dialects of the Ẽgoir language show the influence of Fìsá vocabulary.
Most famously, in East Azhwallõ, there is a considerable population of Arlthunian ethnicity, the descendants of settlers who arrived centuries ago. This region is nicknamed "Lesser Arlthun"; some Ẽgoir consider it as the unrecognised 13th province of the kingdom. On several occasions throughout their history, the Lesser Arlthunians have risen in rebellion against the Crown, seeking independence. The Royal House of Ilverõ has treated the Arlthunian population extremely harshly as a result. The Gualloir's laws discriminate heavily against Arlthunians.
