Languages of Downalla

This page details the languages spoken in Downalla. There is a great diversity of languages on the planet, with several major language families. All of these families are descended from the Polyphony, a Proto-World language which was used tens of thousands of years ago. The Polyphony was spoken by all sentient beings; it was an extremely inflected language with a vast number of registers. These registers enabled communication between the different species, who did not necessarily possess the same speech organs. For instance, the Proto-Caninic and Proto-Avian registers were spoken by species without voiceboxes. Although they consisted of barks and calls, these registers were fully intelligible to those who used words as the basic units of communication.

The Polyphony came to an end due to the calamity caused by damage to the MirlĂn, the marble in which Downalla's universe is housed. This resulted in the division of the species, and the development of each of the major language families. Thus, a process began whereby the registers of the Polyphony diverged into separate, mutually unintelligible languages.
