An essay on this setting's influences is over here
Chancers is a dub reggae-flavoured sci-fi setting inspired by Irish and Caribbean tradition.
Many light years away from Downalla lies the star Graen, the heart of the Azabel System. Its six planets, from Erzul to Oga, are home to humans, Srevooh and Miloko, to name a few.
The Azabel System has no cobalt or silicon; its peoples have never developed digital technology. The galaxy hums with analogue technology: here, civilisation is built on cassettes, contact with the spirit world, and fast wits.
The Otherworld is a parallel reality to the Azabel System. It is a realm in which time flows in ways entirely distinct from material reality. The Otherworld is ruled by the immortal Archons, under whom are thrones, dominions and ethereal legions. They are unconcerned with the Azabel System… most of the time.
The spirits of the dead must serve their time in the Otherworld. Yet their knowledge is not beyond the peoples of Azabel. Spacers, gifted psychonauts, use their powers to make contact with the ancestors, without whose guidance interplanetary travel would be impossible. Meanwhile, in their arcane studios, Soundboys record spirits, living and dead, onto tape for future use. These cassettes are known as “RI” – “Retained Intelligence”, and are of serious value. With the knowledge contained on spirit cassettes, almost anything can be achieved, from piloting ships to cracking bank vaults.
Spacers are not the only ones with supernormal abilities. Their polar opposites, the Headers, use telekinesis to bend reality to their will. Yet most people in the Azabel System have no special skills, and must get by however they can. They make up the millions of Gurriers, Truckers, Wasters and Chancers across the galaxy.
